Lake Annecy – “The Pearl of the Alps” ” The French Venice “
Annecy is an absolutely MUST to visit (tout de suite!) With its breath taking beauty, historical buildings, cobbled streets, famous markets and a magic of its own whether it be in the summer or winter months. It took our breath away and hope you manage to find time to visit this incredible place. We always visit on the way back to the airport if we have a later flight as Annecy is on the way back to Geneva Airport ( approx 30 minutes ) and an added benefit to that is you miss a Toll Road. It has always been a perfect end to our holiday.
Saying that there is so much to do and there is never enough time to wonder around and hire a pedalo on the Lake or take a cruise on the Lake so it is well worth a day visit.
It is only 1.30 mins from the apartment and is a pleasant drive to get to on a scenic route from Albertville.
I can only describe this as an EPIC adventure but well worth the ride!!
In summer, visitors can drive or cycle to The Petit-Saint-Bernard Pass ( Col du Petit-Saint-Bernard ) heading up the mountain from Bourg St Maurice but in winter the pass can only be reached on skis, via the slopes of the Espace San Bernardo. Although “little” is in the title, there is nothing small about how high you feel at an altitude of 2,188m!! The pass marks the the border between France and Italy and where the famous hospice of Saint Bernard can be visited which was how the St Bernard Dog was named as they guarded the hospice in the 11th Century ( A little history lesson there for you! ) Journey time from the apartment will take approx 1 hour. Take you time as the bends are..how can I put it “bendy?”
Now it doesn’t need to become an epic adventure as visitors can turn around and go back down the mountain, but if like me you just want to see what is around the corner it is worth continuing down the Mountain to the beautiful Italian village of La Thuile and further round the exclusive resort of Cormayeur where the Pizza’s are to die for and of course for dessert no stop in Italy is the same without tasting the ice cream.
This is the time when you need to make the decision to turn back after a jolly nice day ooooorrrrrr…. go through The Mont Blanc Tunnel and make your way to Chamonix and have the best day ever!!!!!!
The tunnel isn’t the cheapest journey at 54 euros return ( 43 one way ) but well worth the ticket to see The Glacier and be only half an hour away from Chamonix the home of Mont Blanc.
I am sure the home of ‘Mont Blanc’ does not need too much of an introduction but if you are not familiar with Chamonix then this jewel of a French resort at the base of Mont Blanc is year-round with cable cars taking visitors up to several nearby peaks with panoramic views, including Aiguille du Midi above town, and Pointe Helbronner, across vast glacier fields on the Italian border.
The resort centre is vibrant with beautiful buildings and a charming church over looking the village square, which has a unique buzz and where numerous mountain events start and finish.
An alternative to the Mont Blanc Tunnel is a 2 hour scenic drive through Albertville.
